The Forensic Anthropology Program offers a variety of courses in forensic anthropological techniques and procedures, human anatomy, osteology, pathology, human remains recovery, trauma analysis, death investigation, research design, expert witness testimony, and forensic science.
It can be used in a variety of applications, including criminal investigations, engineering, and the study of human evolution. Osteology should not be confused with osteopathy, which is a type of alternative medicine that emphasizes the healing of the “whole patient.” A subdiscipline of anthropology and archeology, osteology is a detailed study of the structure of bones, skeletal elements, teeth, morphology, function, disease, pathology, the process of ossification (from cartilaginous molds), the resistance and hardness of bones (biophysics), etc. often used by scientists with identification of human remains with regard to age, death, sex, growth, and development in a biocultural context. The Osteology Teaching Lab provides a space and materials for student engagement with hands-on learning and research experiences focused on human and non-human skeletal remains. The lab is used to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels on human osteology, forensic anthropology, zooarchaeology and paleontology.
