June 2019 (2) May 2019 Pushing the frontiers in attosecond quantum mechanics with increasing temporal and spatial resolution and often-limited theoretical models results in unexpected observations. At the same time, attosecond science continues to expand into more complex solid-state and molecular systems, where it starts to have impact beyond its traditional grounds. The motion of electrons on the atomic scale has been hidden from direct experimental access until recently. We review the revolution in technology that opened the door to real-time observation and time-domain control of atomic-scale electron dynamics, and address the expected implications of having the tools to monitor electrons with sub-atomic resolution in both space and time. The attosecond science group at the Stanford PULSE Institute focuses on dynamics on this timescale, which is a science frontier both for experiments and for quantum many-body theory.

The majority of attoscience employs pump–probe methods.

Attosecond science, a recently established research field that is overarching, relating the various traditional subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, etc.), holds strong promise to this regard. It does not only provide these tools, but also to enable

The behaviour of atoms in powerful laser fields is the key to attosecond science. Although this behaviour has been studied for many years, it is still not completely understood. We use the simplest atoms of all, hydrogen atoms, to make precise measurements of attosecond dynamics. 2019-01-21 On the other hand, those nonlinear processes in the XUV region is indispensable for progress of attosecond science including attosecond atomic/molecular physics and chemistry, because it is very useful for investigating ultrafast phenomena directly in attosecond time scale.

An attosecond is 1×10 −18 of a second (one quintillionth of a second). For context, an attosecond is to a second what a second is to about 31.71 billion years. The word "attosecond" is formed by the prefix atto and the unit second. Atto-was derived from the Danish word for eighteen (atten). Its symbol is as.

Laboratory Website Attosecond Science Research Team. 2017-02-08 · Finally I will describe our plans for the transition from FEL R&D to science and discuss the roadmap to attosecond science with LCLS-II. Speaker: Agostino Marinelli, SLAC Program Description Time-resolved experiments at the attosecond scale hold great promise for understanding ultrafast electron dynamics in molecules, as well as the role of electron coherence in chemistry. The emphasis of the research in the last 20 years is in the scientific areas of AMO physics, attosecond science and strong field laser-matter interactions. Scientists have been developing sources of light with ever-shorter pulse durations, in order to study motion in Attosecond pulses were first produced in 2001.

A strong oscillating laser field can create modulations in the electron wavefunction. The wavepacket can expand over ~10-100 hydrogen-atom sizes away from the parent ion. The modulations of the electron wavefunction can give birth to extreme high order harmonics spanning from the IR and visible and UV spectral region, throughout the vacuum ultrviolet, extreme ultraviolen, soft X-ray regions and potentially reaching even the hard X-ray region. Attosecond science offers formidable tools for the investigation of electronic processes at the heart of important physical processes in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics.
